Liver Anatomy- Physiology: The liver is a gland, the largest one in the human body. It generally weighs between 1,300 and 3,000 grams. The liver is crucial to human physiology and performs many invaluable jobs for the body related to metabolizing vitamins, protein, and carbohydrates, detoxing chemicals, and synthesizing proteins and other materials.
Liver Anatomy- A Picture: If you look at a picture of the liver, it looks like a rust-colored wedge shaped organ that takes up the upper right side of the abdomen. The liver can extend to the upper middle and upper left abdominal quadrants as well.
Liver Anatomy- The Human Liver : The liver is vital to human existence and is a very resilient organ. It has the ability to regenerate damaged parts and can recover from diseases if caught in time. However, there are many illnesses and diseases that can inhibit the liver’s function and damage the liver’s anatomy. A few of the most common liver conditions are liver cysts, enlarged livers, and fatty liver disease.
Liver cysts in humans are small sacs or bumps that are comprised of dead cells, and is common in older people. It can also be caused by poor nutrition and a lack of exercise. Fatty liver disease is generally brought on by poor diet and alcohol abuse and consists of fat deposits building up in the liver, negatively impacting the way the liver functions. An enlarged liver is not always a life-threatening problem, but always needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Other diseases of the liver, like Hepatitis, which is causes by viral infection or transmission of blood, or Cirrhosis, generally caused by alcoholism, can both be fatal. The liver can also be ravaged by cancer cells. Liver Cancer is a serious diagnosis and is hard to treat, generally because the cancer has spread by the time the person suffering from it shows any symptoms.
Liver Anatomy- Gall: The liver is an important part of our anatomy, and should be cared for. You should drink plenty of water to help detoxify the liver from toxin buildup. Water is important for general health as well. Avoid alcohol and smoking, two activities that are extremely harmful for the liver. Eat a nutritional diet, full of vitamins and minerals, and low in fat. Stay within a healthy weight range and exercise daily. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night and avoid coffee and caffeinated drinks. To ensure your liver is healthy and functioning, look for foods high in anti-oxidants- these are great for all of your organs, including your gall bladder. The gall bladder is an organ close in both proximity and function to the liver and it helps with many of the same jobs. While the gall bladder is not a necessary organ like the liver, it is important to keep it healthy as well. Doing some of the same things, like maintaining a low fat diet, exercising, and not smoking or consuming alcohol, can help keep your gall bladder healthy. An unhealthy gall bladder can become enlarged and can even develop gall stones, which are painful and can even be fatal.
