The muscular system is comprised of muscle fibers. These muscle fibers control the muscles ability to contract. Muscles are responsible for movement. Almost all movement of the body is controlled by muscle. The function of the human skeletal system works in conjunction with the muscular system. While the skeletal system provides the form and shape to our bodies and supports and protects body movement, muscle is responsible for the actual movement. The skeletal system is also responsible for mineral storage.

The heart is part of the muscular system. Although most people don’t know it, the heart is a muscle. Just like the skeletal muscle, the cardiac muscle contains fibers. Muscles are categorized into two groups, involuntary muscles and voluntary muscles. The cardiac muscle is considered an involuntary muscle because conscious thought is not necessary to control its function. Cardiac muscle cells maintain your heart rate. Smooth muscle is involuntary, just like the cardiac muscle. Smooth muscle aids in food digestion. Any involuntary action the body performs (with exception of the heart) is controlled by the smooth muscle.
Muscular System Function
The muscular system cannot function well when it is diseased, just as the skeletal system. The human skeletal system is made of bone. When proper nutrition is not followed, the skeletal system weakens. Diseases like osteoporosis develop wherein there is loss of bone tissue, which causes weakening of the muscular system and weakening of the skeletal system. The bone loses calcium and then become thinner making it extremely easy to break. That’s why old people suffer hip fractures. The bones become brittle and they break. It’s important to get adequate calcium for proper muscular development. Foods that are calcium rich such as milk, yogurt, and cheese are important.
A Word About Diet and Exercise
The foods you will need to eat to keep your skeletal and muscular systems in good health should be very high in complex carbohydrates as opposed to refined carbohydrates. These carbohydrates will keep you satiated for longer periods of time. Exercise, in particular, resistance training is necessary for strong bones. This does not necessarily mean going to the gym, but it really is the best way to go. Still, if you can’t afford a membership, try these exercises: squats, shoveling snow from your driveway for 15 minutes; walk laps around the mall for 18 minutes; go bowling for 30 minutes; splash around in an indoor pool for 15 minutes. All of these activities will raise your metabolism and help you burn fat and keep your bones strong and healthy as you get older. If you incorporate all of these tips, you will learn how to diet safely, keep the fat off permanently and most importantly have strong and healthy bones.
